Pool Pump Tune Up
Annual Maintenance
sed on our 46 years of Pool Pump & Motor experience in the South
Florida area, we have determined that approximately 75 percent of
pool motor problems are as a direct result of shaft seal failure.
You may ask: What is the shaft seal? Quite simply, the shaft seal
is a component of the pump assembly that keeps the pool water in
the wet end portion of the pump
(where it belongs) and keeps the pool
water out of the motor-electrical end (where it dosen't belong)

When the seal fails, chlorinated pool water, gets into the electric
motor, destroying the bearings, casing, and windings, and this can occur within days of a seal failure...When the bearings fail, the motor becomes very NOISY

Based on our real world experience in South Florida we find that
seal failure usually occurs from 1 1/2 to 4 years on a new pump,
the average being 3 years.  If a seal failure occurs during the
motor warranty period the warranty is void because water damage
is excluded specifically by motor manufacturers

WHAT CAUSES SEAL FAILURE

There are many reasons, some scientifically proven and some theories
(1)Water Chemistry out of balance (2)Pump Runs Dry due to leaks or low water level (3)Long Priming Times due to 2" pipe used on newer pools (4)Change in Quality of Seal Materials over the last few years (seal manufacturers deny this) (5)Increased use of Salt Chlorine
Generator Systems (6)Motors running hotter transmitting heat thru the shaft (7)Shaft seals are made of carbon/graphite/phenolic material---Pool water contains Chlorine,a halogen---the chlorine errodes the carbon seal causing an eventual failure  (8)Angular misalignment between the shaft and seal faces, these must be 90 degrees perpendicular, any deviation causes the seal head to wobble stressing the bellows causing rapid failure, this is usually caused by heat damage to a plastic seal plate... The actual
cause of seal failure is still up for debate...pump & motor manufacturers are supposedly working on a solution...but one must
ponder... Is it really in their best interest to decrease their annual sales by making the product last longer?

WHAT CAN BE DONE
We recommend the shaft seal be replaced at yearly intervals with a high quality seal. At the same time replace any worn orings and internal parts that are worn beyond factory specifications.  This service should be performed on good running pumps.  If your pump is already noisy and leaking it is too late for preventive maintenance

THIS IS A PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE SERVICE FOR GOOD RUNNING PUMPS
WE WILL NOT PERFORM THIS SERVICE ON PUMPS THAT ARE DAMAGED OR ARE IN A CONDITION SUCH THAT IN OUR OPINION THE SERVICE CANNOT BE REASONABLY PERFORMED. WE WILL ONLY PERFORM THIS SERVICE ON PUMPS
WHOSE PARTS ARE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE
